On the 1st of July 1978 Mark Smith accepted an offer from Brian Thompson to join the staff at Thompson’s Mercery at 73 Lamb Street Murgon. The business was established in 1929 by Brian’s dad, Col Thompson and his business partner Andy Stewart, trading as Stewart and Thompson. Brian had a grounding in menswear in Piggotts in Toowoomba, moving back to Murgon in 1967 to take over the family business.

Mark was fortunate to have had 12 months experience in Brisbane at the Trend Shop at Myers which led Brian to offer him a position as sales assistant.

Over the next 14.1/2 years Mark learnt a lot from Brian. They saw many changes in fashion, work wear and sportswear. Mark learnt stock control, buying, product knowledge, window dressing and display and general running of the store. It was in 1993 that Brian and his wife Elaine offered Mark and his wife Janelle the opportunity to buy the business, and on the 1st of February 1993, Mark Smith’s Menswear was born.

In June 2000 the business shifted from 73 Lamb Street to 87 Lamb Street. This premises was much larger, enabling the business to expand the stock selection. Over the years Mark Smith’s Menswear have diversified into embroidery and corporate wear, which is now a large part of the business.

Mark & Janelle are proud to have supported and still support many local sporting and community groups. They like to support the ones who support them.
